Canadian Critical Incident Inc. (CCII) has revised the two-day Crisis Negotiation Techniques for First Responders Course to reflect the changes to the Ontario Use of Force Model, with an emphasises on conflict resolution and de-escalation strategies and techniques, considering the subjects metal/emotional state.
Attendees will be trained in the concepts and philosophy of crisis negotiations, subject assessment, mental illnesses and how to manage people in crisis through de-escalation strategies. The training will develop the attendee’s ability to recognize high risk situations, use defusing techniques, enhance active listening, call on effective communication skills and apply crisis negotiation techniques and strategies.
This two-day course will also provide a general understanding of the role, responsibilities and skills of a Crisis Negotiator for the First Responders.
First Responders will benefit from the skills crisis negotiators use in crisis intervention, de-escalation and crisis communication. The course will also focus on instruction for attendees who will respond to incidents involving individuals experiencing mental illness, in a state of crisis or suicidal.
Learning Objectives: 1. Understanding of basic conflict resolution, de-escalation strategies and techniques 2. Assess the individual to determine appropriate strategies during crisis negotiation 3. Ability to use communication skills, theories, and crisis communication techniques 4. Adept at using active listening techniques and understanding their role in communicating empathy and building rapport. 5. Knowledge of the methods used to resolve crisis incidents peacefully while ensuring personal safety 6. Possess and apply suicide and crisis intervention skills
Upon completion participants will also be able to: 1. Understand and employ concepts and techniques of crisis de-escalation, crisis negotiations, subject assessment, suicide intervention and communicating with subjects in crisis, who are expressively violent, suffering from mental illness and in a state of crisis 2. Understand the nature of high-risk incidents and recognizing the value of effective empathetic communication 3. Apply the principles of the Behavioural Influence Stairway Model 4. Recognize the characteristics and have a basic understanding of depression, schizophrenia, antisocial, borderline personality disorders and apply the appropriate crisis negotiation techniques and strategies
